The republic of Albania is an official candidate for membership in the European Union. Located on the Adriatic and Ionian Sea within the Mediterranean Sea, the country shares land borders with Kosovo the northeast, Montenegro to the northwest, North Macedonia to the east and Greece to the south and maritime borders with Montenegro, Italy and Greece to the west.
Aside from the Albanian language, Albania also recognizes several minority languages including Aromanian, Greek and Macedonian. The capital city of the country is Tirana.
On July 21, 2021, Gramoz Ruçi assumed office as the acting president of Albania. He succeeded Ilir Meta, who served as the country's eighth president from July 24, 2017 to June 9, 2021.
