Japan's Imperial Household Agency says Emperor Naruhito will attend the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics unaccompanied by any other member of the imperial family.

The agency made the announcement on Tuesday.

As Honorary Patron of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the Emperor is due to declare the Olympics open at the ceremony to be held on Friday at the National Stadium in Tokyo.

The agency says Empress Masako will not be joining the Emperor. The decision was made in keeping with the plan for other Olympic officials, who are to attend unaccompanied by their spouses.

The opening ceremony, along with most events, will be held without spectators due to a resurgence in coronavirus cases in Tokyo and other parts of the country.

On the day before the ceremony, the Emperor will receive a courtesy call at the Imperial Palace from senior officials of the International Olympic Committee, including IOC President Thomas Bach.

On the day of the ceremony, the Emperor will also receive foreign VIPs at the palace.

Past Olympic competitions in Japan have seen members of the Imperial Family viewing events in person, but none will be graced with their presence on this occasion.
