Former Foreign Affairs Secretary Roberto "Bobby" Romulo believes fighting fire with fire is the only way to beat President Rodrigo Duterte and his anointed one in the 2022 national elections.

"The next election will be fought in cyberspace – be it the social media trolls or even outright digital shenanigans by the side that have the means to do so or is friendly with those who have. Truth is the counter weapon of choice against those who will bend it to change the narrative," said Romulo in a message sent to his friends, allies and like-minded individuals.

"I strongly suggest that you highlight Aquino legacies to your family, friends, and acquaintances. If possible, provide moral and financial support to those who are in social media. It is my understanding that there are trolls on our side but regrettably weak in comparison to Duterte trolls," added Romulo.

The AIG Philippines chairman is a BFF of former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario and former central bank governor Joey Cuisia who has been at the receiving end of Duterte's curses and insults after criticizing his administration's impotent stand against China's incursions in the West Philippine Sea.

Romulo explained that his letter was meant to underscore the "sad plight" of the country under Duterte "which has been characterized by incompetence, brutality, corruption, incivility, abuse of power, and dishonesty."

From 2016 to 2021, Romulo said Duterte has reversed all the gains achieved under the late former President Noynoy Aquino.

"The simplicity, dignity, moral values and respect for democratic ideals that the under-appreciated Noynoy Aquino brought stands in stark contrast to Duterte. Do we really want six more years of this dark age in our history? Six more years of (Presidential Spokesperson) Harry Roque and (Solicitor General) Jose Calida? " said Romulo.

Aside from the WPS issue and brutal anti-drug war, Romulo lambasted Duterte's "incompetent management of the pandemic (which has) resulted in unnecessary deaths and impoverished the poor even more."

The 82-year old Romulo, who revealed that he was facing a "medical challenge", said he has no personal or political agenda in coming out to seek the "political demise" of Duterte.
