Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and CEO Senator Richard Gordon called on all the PRC volunteers and staff to increase their efforts to fight against Covid-19, especially now that the more contagious variant, known as Delta, is already here in the country.

"We are not spectators; we are not watchers. We are leaders. We move people…This is what makes us all proud Red Cross volunteers and staff. Do not rest on your laurels. You must continue the things you do," Gordon said.

He also urged the public to get vaccinated.

"Gustong-gusto ng variant ang hindi nababakunahan [Variant is affecting mostly people who are unvaccinated]. I call for a sense of urgency, a call for the sense of duty in the highest order," Gordon emphasized.

Gordon, who was the keynote speaker during the first Anniversary of PRC Batangas Molecular Laboratory over the weekend, said that there is a need for a sense of urgency, now that the delta variant is rapidly spreading.

"What is important is that we do our mission which is to serve humankind," he said.

Gordon also highlighted the achievements of the PRC Batangas Chapter's Molecular Laboratory.

"Despite the large population in Batangas, we have placed four machines there and you have become number one outside Metro Manila, he said.

He also reminded the public about the importance of minimum health standard protocol.

"Good hygiene, physical distancing, and wearing masks are essential," he said as he also stressed the importance of testing.

"Kung walang vaccines [If there are no vaccines], let's focus on testing. Otherwise, magla-lockdown tayo; hindi tayo makakalabas, hindi makakapag-face-to-face classes, ang mga bata [we will be under lockdown; we can't go out, there will be no face-to-face classes for the children]," he added.

Gordon ended his speech congratulating and thanking the PRC staff and volunteers.

"You are the best. I congratulate and thank you all! When the world no longer watches, we do what must be done. Very rarely that we have the opportunity to save lives. Now is the time. We will make sure that we will win the battle against Covid-19. I am proud to be working with you," he concluded.
