Ian David Long was a United States Marine Corps veteran from California, USA. His parents David Long and Colleen Long separated before he turned 4 and when they eventually divorced, he lived with Colleen.

  1. In 2006, he and his mother moved into a one-story on Fowler Avenue in Newbury Park, Ventura County, California. In the same year, he was involved in a traffic collision. No charges were filed. He transferred from El Modena High School in  Orange, California to Newbury Park High School where he played baseball. His baseball coach Scott Drootin described him as a very intense person who did not seem like a happy kid.
  2. In June 2008, he graduated from Newbury Park High School.
  3. On August 4, 2008, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in Los Angeles, California. His unit was based in Hawaii, USA and his military occupational specialty was machine gunner.
  4. In June 2009, he and Stavroula Tzavaras got married in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  5. From November 16, 2010 to June 14, 2011, he was deployed to Afghanistan. He received a Combat Action Ribbon.
  6. In 2011, he and Tzavaras separated. In April 2013, they dissolved the marriage in Ventura County. They neither had children nor owned property.
  7. In 2012 and 2014, he lived at addresses in Simi Valley and Reseda, both in Los Angeles, with Blake Winnett, who is 7 years older than him. According to Winnett, he was kind of weird and was always alone. They hung out together at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Ventura County.
  8. On March 2, 2013, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps, reaching the rank of corporal. His last duty assignment was at Kanehoe Bay, Hawaii.
  9. In 2013, he was arrested for speeding in Ventura County. From 2013 to 2016, he studied athletic training at California State University, Northridge in Los Angeles. He did not graduate. He also went to the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County, California for two spring semesters. While at California State University, a group of students made disrespectful comments to him after learning of his military service. He started referring to college students as college-civilians who should be wiped off the map, an individual told detectives.
  10. In 2015, he was the victim of a battery at a bar in Thousand Oaks. In 2015 and in 2016, he received physical and mental health treatment from Kaiser Permanente and was diagnosed with adjustment disorder with mixed anxiety and depressed mood, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), combat and military operational stress reaction and chronic pain.
  11. In March 2017, he posted information about his military service on a special forces forum called ShadowSpear under the name doorkicker03. He said he was an infantry machine gunner while in the U.S. Marine Corps for 4 years and 6 months and was an instructor in Okinawa, Japan.
  12. In April 2018, Ventura County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to his residence in Newbury Park to check on his wellbeing based on his neighbor Tom Hanson's concerns and found him acting irate and irrationally. He told them he had injured his left shoulder in a motorcycle accident which was preventing him from getting a job, working out and re-enlisting in the military. A mental health crisis team who responded to the scene determined that he did not meet the criteria for involuntary hospitalization.
  13. When he was living with his mother in Newbury Park in 2018, there was ongoing conflict between them regarding him moving out of the residence. On November 1, 2018, her sent her a text message saying, "My plan fell through yesterday. I need another week. By next Saturday morning I will be out of here forever." He also left a handwritten note at his home saying, "NO Funeral." On November 7, 2018, he left a note about his burial preferences before entering the Borderline Bar & Grill at around 11:20 p.m. Armed with a .45-caliber handgun, around 190 rounds of ammunition, a knife and 10 smoke generating devices, he fired 61 rounds from the handgun, killing 11 patrons and striking Sergeant Ron Helus multiple times, then fatally shot himself. He died at the age of 28.
