"It is in fulfilling the desire of public, and commuters, Department of Transportation has been implementing projects geared towards that end," Department of Transportation (DOTr) The Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Art Tugade announced in partnership with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed targeted 129 kilometers of bike lanes in Metro Cebu amounting to P150 million.
This is part of 497 kilometers the two agencies have completed with pavement markings, physical separators, and road signages in the three metropolitan areas of National Capital Region, Metro Cebu and Metro Davao under P1.09 billion Bayanihan Bike Lane Networks Project.
In NCR, DOTr and DPWH finished 313 kilometers amounting to P801.8 million and 55 kilometers in Metro Davao amounting to P145.3 million.
DOTr Secretary Tugade is set to prepare its inauguration of the three bike lanes and signages.
Tugade said installation of safety markings, road signages, and street separators shows how committed DOTr is in promoting bike-friendly communities and protecting pedestrian's safety at all costs.
"We intend to provide commuters with access to faster and efficient means of mass transportation, and to open infrastructure for active transportation such as walking and cycling," he stressed.
DOTr and DPWH, together with Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) earlier signed Joint Administrative Order (JAO) 2020-001 to assign roles of national and local government units on the promotion of active transportation.
Under Republic Act No. 11494 or the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, promotion of active transportation was strengthened by members of the government offices to acknowledge bicycles as an additional mode of transportation and provision of funding to support establishment of bike lane networks.
DOTr is set to plan actual date of the inauguration of bike lanes in Metro Cebu, Metro Davao, and NCR this month July.
