I believe that everyone is willing to hear or interested in the love story because it might satisfy our curiosity. Many of us can be relate when we hear love stories. Especially, love stories can inspire and motivate someone.
In the 1st reading, we have heard the love story from the book Song of songs. This is a very romantic story but full of theological meanings because it manifests the love story between God and His people, the love of God to humanity.
Today, we celebrate the feast of Saint Mary Magdalene. Her life story is a beautiful narrative of God's love for humanity, the love of God to the sinners. Gospel of Luke (Lk 8:2) reveals that Mary Magdalene was the woman that Jesus cast out seven demons. She was also known as a woman who had a former life as a prostitute and sinner. However, Jesus saved Mary Magdalene despite of her sinfulness. Mary Magdalene responded to Jesus with love and gratitude. In the story of St. Mary Magdalene, we saw a great story of conversion, from her former life filled with sin, wickedness, and evil, into a new life filled with faith, devotion, and commitment to God. Mary Magdalene became a true disciple of the Lord. She accompanied Him on His journeys, even to the foot of the cross at Calvary.
In the Gospel today, Mary Magdalene is the one who witnessed the Lord's Resurrection. We can see that she loved God so much that she was able to overcome her weakness and fear as a simple woman. She visited the tomb in the early morning while other disciples, because of fear and despair, just stayed in a closed room.
Actually, Mary Magdalene just recognized the Risen Lord when he called her by name. In the Scriptures, calling by name always associates with the mission. Indeed, Jesus gave Mary a mission to proclaim the Good News of resurrection to disciples who were living in fears and despairs. In other words, after experiencing the joy and hope of the Resurrected Christ, Mary came to share to others who are living in misery and downheartedness.
The commandment of love God and love neighbors challenge us that we cannot ignore the cry of the poor during this time. True enough, in this time, we are called to bring hope for those who live in hopelessness, especially the poor and the abandoned. As we know that there are many living in depression and anxiety due to Covid-19. More than ever, they really need inspiration and hope in life. It's so great that we easily overcome our nervousness and fear in order to go out to serve the poor and talk to them the story of God's love. The pastoral work that we have is a good chance that we can bring the Good News of love and hope to those who live in fear and suffering. We pray that through our presence and apostolic work, the poor can experience the Risen Lord who is always with them and accompany them in the journey of suffering during this time of crisis.
May Saint Mary Magdalene intercede for us always. Amen.
