WIN a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and you go down as one—if not the most—of the most revered Filipino athlete or athletes ever.
Not only that. Win that mint and you'll be financially secured for the rest of your life.
Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino announced on Tuesday that San Miguel Corp. big boss Ramon S. Ang upped the ante for an Olympic gold by offering a P10 million bonus to whoever wins gold in Tokyo.
"I officially announce that I am so thankful to Ramon S. Ang of San Miguel [Corp.] for committing P10 million for the first-ever Olympic Filipino gold medalist—the same bonus committed by MVP [Manuel V. Pangilinan]," Tolentino told the virtual Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Tuesday.
"It's now P30 million [cash] for an Olympic gold medalist as of today," he added.
Doing the math, the P30 million extravaganza will be culled from RSA (Ang's initials) and MVP's total pledge of P20 million and the P10 million provided for by Republic Act 10699 or the Athletes and Coaches Incentives Act.
RSA and MVP also pledged bonuses for a silver medal—P5 million each—and bronze—P2 million apiece. Thus, adding the government incentive which the Philippine Sports Commission through Chairman William Ramirez will award, a silver medal will be worth P15 million and a bronze P6 million.
But wait, there's some more.
The gold medalist, Tolentino said, will also be rewarded with a house and lot in Tagaytay City.
"If all of them win an Olympic gold medal each, we'll give away 19 house and lots," Tolentino told the forum presented by SMC, Milo, Amelie Hotel Manila, Braska Restaurant and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. "We are ready."
Tolentino said he expects a rainfall of rewards and bonuses in the next few days leading to the Tokyo Olympics which open on July 23 and end on August 8.
"There's a lot more to come and maybe the rewards will rise to P50 million or the equivalent of $1 million," he said. "That will inspire more athletes to work hard to give glory to our country."
Nineteen Filipinos are competing in Tokyo. They are are runner Kristina Knott, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, judoka Kiyomi Watanabe, rower Cris Nievarez, shooter Jayson Valdez, skateboarder Margielyn Didal, taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa, gymnast Carlos Yulo, swimmers Luke Gebbie and Remedy Rule, weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Elreen Ando, golfers Juvic Pagunsan, Yuka Saso and Bianca Pagdanganan and boxers Carlo Paalam, Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, and Nesthy Petecio.
Diaz became P7.5 million richer when he clinched silver in the Rio 2016—P5 million from the PSC (incentives act), P2 million from President Rodrigo Duterte and P.5 million from the Zamboanga City local government.
Tolentino said the athletes who will represent the country are determined and highly motivated to win the gold.
"Definitely. This is our time," he said. "We'll win that gold as one."
