WITH the quarterfinal cast in the Northern Division already complete, attention shifts to the Southern Division with five teams still fighting for their playoff lives going into Wednesday's 34th and final round of the 2021 PCAP-GM Wesley So Cup chess championships.
Palawan Queen's Gambits -- the only all-female team in the tournament -- will take on unpredictable Lapu-Lapu Naki Warriors in a bid to formalize their entry to the eight-team quarterfinal phase of this 24-team tournament sponsored by San Miguel Corporation and sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB)..
At 10-23, the Jorge Mitra-managed Queen's Gambits have the inside track for one of two remaining quarterfinal berths in the South.
Leading the Queen's Gambits' attack are WIM Marie Antoinette San Diego, WM Shania Mae Mendoza, WIM Beverly Mendoza, WNM Carmeliat Abanes, WIM Catherine Secopito,WIM Mikee Charlene Suede and import IM Padmini Rout of India.
San Diego isthe top performer for Palawan with 37 wins, 10 draws and 19 losses for 64.5 total points.
Three teams -- Mindoro Tamaraws, Cebu City Machers and Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates -- are locked in a tight battle for the eighth and final playoff berth.
All three teams have similar 9-24 win-loss rcord, slightly ahead of Lapu-Lapu, which holds 8-25.
In Wednseday's final-day of eliminations, Mindoro will take on Negros Kingsmen, Cebu will battle PCAP All-Filipino runner-up Camarines Soaring Eagles and Surigao will square off with Iriga City Oragons.
The rest of the matches in both divisions will finalize the playoff positioning of all teams, with the No. 1 team taking on the No. 8 team in the next round.
Also, the No 2 team will battle the No. 7 team, the No. 3 squad playing the No 6 team and the No. 4 squad going up against the No. 5 team. Ed Andaya
