Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of Radio High 105.9. Two weeks after Dream FM went off the air and was taken over by Energy FM, Crossover has found itself a new competitor and it happened to be beside each other. Coincidence? I think not.
HIGH FROM THE UNDERGROUND
At the beginning of July 2011, Francis Lumen, through his company Hi-Definition Radio, took over 105.9's operations. The frequency was formerly leased to RJFM's UR 105.9, which migrated its operations online as UR Faceradio after letting go of its lease a month prior.
On July 14, the station was launched as Radio High 105.9 with a smooth jazz format. Lumen was the former owner of Citylite and Joey and the station's voiceover is from the latter. The station stayed true to its slogan "Not For Everyone" since it catered to the upscale audience.
HIGH ON CHOICES
Radio High was known for its quarter-hour segments. Among those are High on the 80s for 80s music (same goes for the 70s & 90s), 21st Century High for 2000s music, High on House for House music, Global High for World music, Natural High for New Age music, High Standards for Standards, OPM High for OPM, High Rhythms for R&B, High on Remakes for remakes of hit songs, High Exclusives for current jazz & R&B and Lite Jazz High for smooth jazz.
Aside from those segments, each of its sponsors has its own segments. Among those are Jaguar Luxury Hour (Jaguar), Maserati Art Music (Maserati) and the station's drivetime segment McDonald's Jazz Breakfast/Night Rush (McDonald's). Radio High also held 105.9 Hours of Christmas, playing only Christmas music for 106 hours to Christmas Day. The concept was adopted by RJFM a few years later.
HIGH ON EXIT
On March 2014, Radio High discontinued its segments. It was revealed that the station went from high to low due to lack of advertising. In order for the station to regain its losses, Lumen subleased the station to a new management, which in turn is the owner of Kiss FM in Lucena.
Radio High quietly went off the air on the night of March 27 and went Retro the next day. Fast forward to July 24, 2019, the station tried its hands once more on smooth jazz as Lite FM, this time with Lumen in full control of the station. Unfortunately, it only lasted for a few months as Lumen let go of the lease, marking the end of Lite FM.
Radio High was more than Joey or any other smooth jazz station. Aside from its usual fanfare, it offered a variety of genres barely heard on the radio.
