SURIGAO DEL NORTE, Philippines -- The teardrop-shaped island off the coast of Mindanao has been included in TIME magazine's World's 100 greatest places.

Best known to a dedicated band of surfers lured by consistent waves, Siargao is slowly gaining popularity as new spots are popping up on the island and additional cell towers are being put up to improve data connectivity.

Soon, the island will improve the Philippine's tourism once it reopens to vaccinated international travelers.

Surigao del Norte 1st District Rep. Francisco Jose Matugas II has welcomed the recognition of Siargao Island by Time Magazine.

"Thank you Time Magazine for the recognition of the creativeness and resilience of the people of Siargao Island," Matugas said.

The recognition, Matugas said, is the magazine's tribute to the people of Siargao and to the businesses that continue to flourish despite the risks posed by Covid-19.
