Kathleen "Kathy" Courtney Hochul is a politician and lawyer from Buffalo, New York, United States. She is a Democrat.

Hochul is married to William Joseph "Bill" Hochul Jr., the U.S. attorney for the western district of New York from March 15, 2010 to October 29, 2016. They have two children together namely Will Hochul and Katie Hochul.

Kathy is the second among the six children of John P. "Jack" Courtney and Patricia Ann "Pat" Rochford Courtney. Their family is Irish Catholic.

When she was young, she worked at a restaurant serving pizza and chicken wings. She would arrive home late in the evening, according to her sister Sheila Heinze, who she shared a room with.
From 1976 to 1980, she attended Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York where she earned her bachelor's degree.
In 1984, she and Bill got married. In the same year, she earned her Juris Doctor from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., USA.
In 1994, she won a seat on the town board of Hamburg, Erie County, New York.
In May 2003, Erie County clerk David J. Swarts appointed her as his deputy.
Appointed by 54th New York governor Eliot Spitzer to replace Swarts, she served as the eighth country clerk of Erie County from January 1, 2007 to June 1, 2011.
In May 2011, she won the special election to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Chris Lee, a Republican, making her the first Democrat to represent New York's 26th congressional district in 40 years.
From June 1, 2011 to January 3, 2013, she was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York's 26th district.
In November 2012, she lost her reelection bid to represent New York's 27th district.
In February 2013, M&T Bank hired her to work in government relations in Buffalo.
Andrew Cuomo selected her as his running mate in the 2014 New York gubernatorial election. They won the election on November 4, 2014. As the 56th New York governor, he appointed her as lieutenant governor of New York. They were reelected on November 6, 2018.
From January 1, 2015 to August 23, 2021, she was the lieutenant governor of New York.
On August 24, 2021, she will become the 57th New York governor following Cuomo's resignation. She is the first female governor of the state.
