PASAY CITY -- Senator Christopher "Bong" Go reassured the residents of Davao City that they will get through the various crises they are currently facing and that the government is ready to help in every way possible so they can recover. He also stressed that the Duterte administration is working hard to make sure no Filipino is left behind in its goal of providing a comfortable life for all.
In a video message at a relief operation on Friday, September 10, Go stated that President Rodrigo Duterte is on top of efforts to address their urgent needs and encouraged local authorities to reach out to their offices should they require any further assistance.
"Alam kong hirap kayong lahat ngayon dahil sa pandemya tapos ang iba ay nawalan pa ng bahay dahil sa nangyaring sunog. Gusto kong ipaalam sa inyo na narito kami, nandito ang gobyerno na nagmamalasakit at nagseserbisyo sa inyo. Handa kaming tumulong ni Pangulong Duterte, lalo na ngayon na lahat ay naghihirap," he promised.
Go's personnel provided meals, vitamins, masks and face shields to 500 struggling residents in batches at the Barangays R. Castillo and Ubalde covered courts and 28 fire victims at the Brgy. Talomo covered court. All necessary health and safety protocols were strictly enforced.
Selected beneficiaries received new pairs of shoes, while some were provided bicycles for their commuting needs. Others were given computer tablets which their children can use to continue their studies under the blended learning approach.
In separate distributions, personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development also handed out financial assistance to help alleviate the impacts of the said crises.
As Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, the Senator went on to remind everyone to protect their health in line with the government protocols to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
He offered to help those with illnesses or injuries so they can get the care they need and advised them to seek medical assistance from the government through the Malasakit Center located at the Southern Philippines Medical Center.
The Malasakit Center is a one-stop shop which brings together the offices of the DSWD, Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.
The program has assisted over two million patients and was institutionalized through the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019 which Go primarily authored and sponsored in the Senate. There are now 139 centers nationwide.
"Mahirap magkasakit, lalo na kung hindi mo alam saan kukunin ang pambayad sa ospital. Mag-ingat tayo dahil delikado ang panahon at nasa gitna pa tayo ng pandemya," continued Go.
"Sa mga nasaktan po sa sunog o nangangailangan ng tulong para ma-operahan, lapitan niyo lang ang aking opisina at ako na po ang magpapagamot sa inyo" he added.
To reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and deaths, the Senator had authored and co-sponsored a bill which provides for a multi-year program to transform the Bureau of Fire Protection into a more modern institution. On Friday, September 10, President Duterte signed into law Republic Act No. 11589, also known as the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Modernization Act.
The new Act provides for the acquisition of modern fire equipment, hiring of additional personnel and provision of specialized training for firefighters. It also directs the BFP to conduct monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives in partnership with the Department of Interior and Local Government and local government units.
The Senator proceeded to thank various officials who extended their support and assistance to the beneficiaries, namely 1st District Representative Paolo Duterte, 2nd District Rep. Vincent Garcia, Mayor Sara Duterte, Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte, R. Castillo Punong Barangay Richard Salas, Talomo Punong Barangay Bendor Calamba and Ubalde Punong Barangay Glicerio Leonor among others.
As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go has supported various infrastructure initiatives to enhance the development and improve the delivery of public services in his hometown.
Among these are the construction of various multi-purpose buildings and local roads; rehabilitation of water systems, drainage systems, and flood control structures in different barangays throughout the city; as well as the construction of a 300-bed capacity infectious diseases building and acquisition of ambulances, among others.
