PASAY CITY -- Senator Christopher "Bong" Go co-sponsored the "Private Security Industry Act" which seeks to strengthen the private security industry by updating the 52-year-old Republic Act No. 5487, also known as "The Private Security Agency Law." The bill is principally sponsored by Senator Ronald dela Rosa.
In a speech placed into the record during the Senate regular session on Wednesday, September 29, Go said that through the measure, private security agencies will now be allowed to hire not more than 2,000 private security professionals, providing more employment opportunities for Filipinos.
The proposed cap is in contrast to the limitation under the old law that private security agencies can hire not more than 1,000 private security professionals if the private security agency is located in the City of Manila, and not more than 500 if the private security agency is in other cities and municipalities.
"The continuing onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation of our fellow Filipinos," said Go.
"COVID-19 has brought various problems to our country which spans health issues, poverty, inequality, hunger, and economic problems. Businesses have closed down and our fellow Filipinos have lost their livelihood which resulted to an increase in unemployment in our country," he added.
Private security professionals include Security Watchmen, Security Guards, Security Officers, Personal Security Escorts, Private Investigator, Training Officers and Directors, K9 Handlers, K9 Administrators, K9 Evaluators, K9 Trainers, Kennel Masters and other Certified or Licensed Security Service Providers rendering or performing security, Investigation, Security Escorting Services, Security Hardware Planners and Systems Designers, Security Hardware Operators, Security Managers, and Security Consultants whether employed by private security agencies, private corporations, government agencies or independently practicing or providing professional security services.
Go mentioned that the law will also increase the validity period of the licenses of private security agencies and private security professionals, ensuring the stability of their jobs.
"Bukod pa rito, mas matagal na rin ang validity period ng mga lisensya ng ating mga private security agencies and private security professionals. Malaki ang maitutulong nito sa stability ng kanilang mga trabaho," said Go.
Ending his speech, Go said that the proposed measure will create job opportunities for Filipinos, which will be critical during COVID-19 and the country's road to recovery.
"Mas marami pong mabibigyan ng trabaho dahil sa panukalang batas na ito na talaga naman pong kinakailangan po natin dahil sa pandemya," he said.
"Magkakaroon na po ng pagkakataon ang iba po nating mga kababayan na qualified para maging private security professional na makakuha ng trabaho at mapakain ang kanilang mga pamilya," Go concluded. (OSBG)
