NAVAL STATION JOSE ANDRADA, Manila -- The logistics support vessel of the Philippine Navy, BRP Dagupan City (LS551), transported much-needed relief items to the country's northernmost province, Batanes, that was recently hit with Super Typhoon Kiko's strong winds and rain. Kiko reached signal #4 in a five-level warning system when it hit the said province.

The Navy's stakeholders all lent a helping hand by providing relief items for the typhoon- struck province. MAYNILAD gave a hundred cases of bottled water, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) provided five thousand USAID Family Food Packs (FPPs), GMA Kapuso Foundation prepared two thousand FFPs, while a thousand FFPs were brought by Tanging Yaman Foundation.

Upon reaching the port of Basco, Batanes, LS551 together with troops from Marine Battalion Landing Team 10, reservists, CAFGUs, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Batanes Tourguides Association, MJ Marie Construction, the Batanes Merchant Services Cooperative, PEO personnel, the PDRRMO, and the PWSDO all gladly assisted in the unloading of cargoes from LS551 when it arrived on September 25. The provincial government of Batanes stated that all the donations received are to be distributed to all families and individuals affected by the typhoon.

This undertaking manifests the Navy's critical role in humanitarian assistance especially in a maritime nation such as ours, where the surrounding waters dictate a robust maritime transport capability such as the transport of much needed cargoes to far-flung islands. It further conveyed the PN's commitment, together with fellow stakeholders, in providing prompt assistance to disaster-stricken fellow Filipinos. (PN)
