Jamal Lindsey Smith, 33, of Chicago, Illinois, United States has been arrested by the Plymouth Police Department, the Decatur Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service. He is expected to be charged with second-degree murder.
At around 10:00 p.m. on July 6, 2021, Smith allegedly was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban and traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 169 in Minnesota, USA when she fatally shot Jay Harrison Boughton, 56, of Crystal, Minnesota. The latter was driving his son home from a baseball game he coached.

Boughton was an assistant coach for the Armstrong/Cooper Youth Baseball Association. He is also a former coach for the Crystal Little League.
When Boughton was shot on July 6, 2021, he lost control of his car and drove off the road into an apartment complex parking lot. With a gunshot wound to the head, he was rushed to the emergency room at the North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minnesota where he was pronounced dead.
On August 24, 2021, a team of U.S. Marshals, Plymouth Police Department detectives and Decatur Police Department officers located Smith in Decatur, Illinois and arrested him without incident. He is being held in Macon County, Illinois while awaiting extradition back to Minnesota.
"This was truly a needle in a haystack that our detectives," KSTP quoted Plymouth Police Department chief Erik Fadden as saying. He added that the public "never stopped digging and working and knocking on doors and reviewing video after video after video."
