QUEZON CITY (PIA) – The Department of Energy (DOE) proposed to increase the mandated annual rate of renewable energy (RE) that electricity suppliers use as part of their power offering to the grid.

In a virtual public consultation, Renewable Energy Management Bureau (REMB) Director Mylene C. Capongcol said the proposed adjustment from the initial 1% to 2.52% starting in 2023 is critical as the agency is now finalizing the National Renewable Energy Program.

"We're just waiting for this to release the National Renewable Energy Program, which would spell out all the policies and programs to promote and develop the renewable energy industry in the country," she said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Alberto R. Dalusong III, representing the National Renewable Energy Board (NREB), said the increment is needed to meet the country's aspirational RE target of at least 35% in the country's energy mix by 2030 and achieve an even higher RE share by 2040.

The Renewable Energy (RE) Act of 2008 mandates that the Philippine energy suppliers source a certain percentage of their power from renewable sources. The DOE and the NREB are tasked with adjusting this percentage to maintain it at an acceptable level.
