QUEZON CITY (PIA)— The National Economic Development Authority joined the celebration of World Environmental Health Day with the launch of the Philippine Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan (PWSSMP).
With the theme, "Kalikasan at Kalusugan sa Kapaligiran: Bida sa Pagbangon ng Lipunan," the country celebrates WEHD every September 26 to underscore the influence of environmental risks and issues on people's health.
The PWSSMP serves as the national action plan to achieve universal access to safe, sufficient, affordable, and sustainable water supply, hygiene, and sanitation by 2030.
NEDA Assistant Secretary Roderick M. Planta said according to the 2015 Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), an average of 87.7% of Filipinos have access to a safe water supply.
Meanwhile, 12.3% or 10.4M Filipinos do not have access to safe water and suffer from water-related diseases like typhoid, cholera, and dysentery.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippine fatality rate of water-related illnesses was one child per week, Plata said.
