At last, the author has managed to curate 15 of his short stories that may provide a reading experience to young adults about what it is like to grow up Filipino.
The contents of 'Give Us This Day: Growing Up Filipino Stories' are taken from the author's previous books and a number of journals and magazines combined that have published the stories in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
The short stories in this new collection deal with experiences and realities of overcoming hardships, including bullying, fighting for the rights of the Indigenous people, a brave way to care for the environment, understanding communities behind the walls of religion, coming to terms with a gay identity, understanding cultural food and the powerful effects of nostalgia.
Many of the stories are told from the perspectives of Filipino characters.
Cybelle Diones from SBS Filipino Radio comments: "Erwin's stories really speak of truth and are very relatable among Filipinos."
She adds that the stories bring a lot of memories especially when you grew up in the Philippines.
There may be scenes in the story that may cause distress to some young viewers so it is recommended that 16 years and above is the most suitable age group as the audience of these works.
Ms Lee Finn from the Brisbane Literary Writers Group comments that even though the stories deal with hardship, they are counterbalanced with ingenuity, courage, persistence and, of course, plenty of humour.
"His characters are always too strong to settle for victim mentality, and what I got from all the stories was that people from the Philippines are like that," Finn says. "They are great problem solvers no matter what you throw at them they seem to be able to turn it around and make the most of it."
Finn considers this as "a rare collection of short stories because it is a very thought-provoking book yet a very comfortable and a pleasure to read."
The 'Give Us This Day Growing Up Filipino Stories' collection is only $6.00AUD on Kindle and $11.20 as paperback.
