Vergel Guintu, 48, had just returned home in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States after dropping his son, 9, at school at around 9:30 a.m. on August 27, 2021 when he heard a noise and went to see what it was. Also at home at the time was his wife and his mother-in-law.
Later, the mother-in-law heard another noise and saw an intruder dress in black inside the house. The intruder was Ethan Goin, 16, a high school student from Summerlin, Nevada.
Goin was a wearing a mask and his hood was pulled tight around his face. He passed in front of the mother-in-law and left.
When Guintu's wife saw that he was lying on the floor while drenched in blood, she called 911. The Las Vegas Fire and Rescue arrived and pronounced him dead at 12:45 p.m.
During an autopsy, forensic technicians found a light-colored hair on Guintu's wrist. It was used as one of the clues that led detectives to Goin.

On August 28, 2021, police found Goin getting into a rideshare. He initially cooperated before fleeing but he was later apprehended in the parking structure of Summerlin Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas.
When interviewed by detectives, Goin claimed that on August 27, 2021, he felt he was being bullied at school so he left first period and broke into the Guintu family's house. The teenager told detectives that when he returned home that day, he was aware that he had a Karambit knife on him and he saw blood on it.
According to Goin, he wanted to get rid of the knife so he ordered a rideshare and was supposed to go to a friend's house on the day he was arrested. The teenager told detectives he would not provide details about what had happened when he was inside the Guintu family's house because everything was a blur.
What Goin remembers, according to him, was that he entered the Guintu family's house by climbing through a window in the house. The high school student added that he recalled staying in the backyard of a house near his neighborhood on the day of Guintu's murder.
Charged with one count of open murder, Goin was booked in Clark County Juvenile Detention Center in Las Vegas and was denied bail in a hearing on September 2, 2021. His next hearing will be on September 9, 2021.
