QUEZON CITY -- Filipino families, especially those in the low-income bracket, can rely on the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and its partners in delivering safer and resilient homes amid the challenging times.

This was the focal point of DHSUD Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario's message during Friday's launch of the National Shelter Month celebration this October.

"Let me once again assure you of the DHSUD and its partner-agencies' commitment to improve the lives of every Filipino family through adequate and affordable housing, inclusive human settlements and well-planned communities," the housing czar stressed.

Secretary Del Rosario, along with Undersecretary Marylin Pintor and other key DHSUD officials, spearheaded the ceremony that also served as the fourth episode of the "Kapihan sa DHSUD: Housing Matters."

Joining the event virtually were KSA heads and top officials and representatives from the private sector, particularly partner developers.

OFFICIALLY OPEN: DHSUD Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario, along with Undersecretary Marylin Pintor and Assistant Secretary Avelino Tolentino III, spearheads the launch of the National Shelter Month during the fourth episode of the "Kapihan sa DHSUD: Housing Matters" on Friday. The housing czar, in his message, pledged that DHSUD and its partners will remain committed to providing resilient and safe shelters for Filipino families, especially the underprivileged.

Making their presence felt virtually to support the National Shelter Month were Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Acmad Rizaldy Moti, National Housing Authority Assistant General Manager Vic Balba, Social Housing Finance Corporation President Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling, National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation President Carlo Luis Rabat and Human Settlements Adjudication Commission Executive Commissioner Melzar Galicia.

Officials from partner-developers – namely the Subdivision and Housing Developers Association, the National Real Estate Association, the Organization of Socialized and Economic Housing Developers of the Philippines Inc and the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders' Associations – also participated via videoconference and also delivered their respective messages of support for the month-long activity.

According to Secretary Del Rosario, the theme "Ligtas at Matatag na Tahanan at Pamayanan, Kanlungan sa Gitna ng Pandemya at Nagbabagong Panahon" is very timely especially as the country is battling the adverse impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

"We all know that our beloved Philippines is a tropical country. As one, we have been beset by droughts, rising sea levels and floods, among many natural disasters. And, for nearly two years now, the COVID-19 pandemic has been plaguing nations and has forced us to hunker down in our homes," the DHSUD chief stressed.

"Now, more than ever, we need resilient shelters not only to stay safe from calamities but to also take refuge from this unseen enemy. These challenges inspired us and our key shelter agencies to come up with the theme for this year's National Shelter Month celebration," he noted.

Secretary Del Rosario likewise stated that DHSUD and its key partners remain adamant on easing the hardships of Filipinos through the provision of safe, resilient and affordable shelters.

Lined up for the month-long celebration are a series of activities such as virtual seminars, forums and summits meant to raise public awareness on government housing projects, protect the welfare of homeowners and property buyers.

There will likewise be workshops organized by the Department's regional offices with topics ranging from measures to assist local government units on how to utilize and craft effective shelter and land use plans amid the ongoing pandemic.

Secretary Del Rosario also expressed hope that the celebration will help appease some of the hardships that our countrymen are facing and wished that the public can gain additional knowledge during the month-long event. (DHSUD)
