DTI 11 highlights protection of digital consumers in Consumer Welfare Month 

As the country celebrates the annual Consumer Welfare Month (CWM) this October, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 has lined up several activities highlighting the protection of digital consumers.

The CWM has been celebrated during the whole month of October each year more than two decades now following the signing of Presidential Decree 1098, series of 1997. This which cited DTI as the lead agency in celebrating the consumers nationwide.

For this year's celebration, the agency banners its commitment to champion consumer welfare promotion and development consistently. Thus, the 2021 CWM carries the theme "Digital Consumers: The New Normal."This means that the celebration will focus on the digitalize way of boosting the economy through the use of online platforms. 

It cannot be denied that the digital world has already become increasingly relevant and indispensable for both consumers and businesses. This can be attributed to the fact that it offers a wide range of opportunities for consumers, such as finding the goods and services they need more easily and in a more convenient way. In the meantime, businesses get to enjoy its numerous benefits, such as access to consumers more easily through the online markets. 

DTI 11 Regional Director Maria Belenda Q. Ambi said that there is a need to harness these opportunities to contribute to a sustainable and inclusive economic development. She further noted that there is an increasing need to strengthen consumer protection and competition in the digital economy.

This year's theme aims to promote consumer awareness and circulate consumer information on e-Commerce, including its benefits and disadvantages for the consumers. This also encourages dialogue and cooperation among consumers, businesses and government. 

"The 2021 CWM endeavors to widen the reach of the government's consumer protection-related initiatives so we can have proactive, responsible and well- informed consumers," Ambi said.

To make the 2021 celebration more meaningful, various activities will be conducted across the region. These are the digital quiz bowl, video clip-making contest, consumer education webinars on Fair Trade Laws, signing of memorandum of understanding (MOU) with private institution partners, Presyo Diskwento Caravan,information matrials dissemination, hanging of streamersin various locations, and other related activities. 

The digital quiz bowl and video clip-making contest will be participated in by the junior and senior high school students, both from the public and private secondary schools throughout Davao Region. These are designed to increase the awareness of today's Filipino youth, being the new normal consumers in the digital world, as well as,promote consumerism in the country.

Ambi noted that DTI will continue to support technological transformation and upgrades, especially in the online markets and e-Commerce platforms, and recognize the primary role of online institutions in providing economic opportunities to business and continued protection ofconsumers.

"This year's  theme is a pledge that we will continue with our initiatives in protecting today's digital consumers through our agency's thrusts on digital reform," she said, adding that 

consumers must be more discerning and wiser when purchasing online

The regional trade official reminded everyone to only transact with legitimate online sellers . She advised them to do background checks before placing credit card numbers  and counter check the reliability of websites or sellers.
