Vice President Leni Robredo announced on Thursday that she will run for president in the 2022 elections.

After months of speculation and with only one day left to file certificates of candidacy, Vice President Leni Robredo announced on Thursday that she will run for president in the 2022 national elections.

Robredo made her decision during a press conference in her office at the Quezon City Reception House.

"Lalaban ako, lalaban tayo. Inihahain ko ang aking sarili bilang kandidato sa pagka-pangulo sa halalan ng 2022," Robredo said in a public address.

Her announcement put an end to months of speculation about whether she would run for president, run for a local office, or leave politics altogether. This also meant that Robredo is now accepting the opposition coalition 1Sambayan's nomination as its presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.

Robredo was pushing for a united opposition slate in the 2022 national elections, which explains her late decision to run for president. She met with other potential candidates, including Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Senators Panfilo Lacson and Manny Pacquiao, prior to filing her certificates of candidacy.

However, the talks appear to have failed, as all three have expressed their intention to run for president, with all three having already filed their own COCs.
