SAN JUAN Predators and Iloilo Kisela Knights pulled off back-to-back victories to solidify their hold on the lead in their respective divisions in the 2021 PCAP San Miguel Corporation-Ayala Land chess championships. San Juan blasted Rizal Towers, 18-3, and Olongapo Rainbow, 16-5, behind strong performances by WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda and IM Ricardo de Guzman to keep the lead with 18-1 win-loss record and 293.5 points. Fronda outclassed Kelly Ann David of Rizal, 3-0, and Angel Orijuela of Olongapo, 2-1, while De Guzman humbled NM Elias Lao of Rizal, 3-0, and Adriano Valenzuela of Olongapo, 3-0, to power the Predators of PCAP Chairman Michael Angelo Chua and Coach Hubert Estrella to a sweep. The top board matches pitting GM Oliver Barbosa of San Juan against IM Joel Pimentel of Rizal and IM Rolando Nolte against NM Noel de Cruz ended in fighting draws. Pasig Pirates humbled Isabela Knight Raiders, 14.5-6.5, and Caloocan Load Manna Knights, 15.5-6.5 to join San Juan at 18-1. The Pirates, however, remained in second with 277 points. Leading the Pirates' attack againt the Knight Raiders were GM Roland Salvador, who edged IM Angelo Young, 2-1; David Elorta, who downed NM Gerardo Cabellon, 2-0; Kevin Arquero, who beat AGM Melchor Foronda and Renan Rabago, 3-0; GM Darwin Laylo, who dumped Anwar Cabugatan, 3-0, and Eric Labog, who crushed Lordwin Espiritu, 3-0. Sherwin Tiu, Rudy Ibanez, Arquero, Laylo and Labog led the Pirates' convincing victory over the Load Manna Knights. PCAP All-Filipino champion Laguna Heroes also made their presence felt with 15.5-5.5 victory over Caloocan and 14-7 triumph over Rizal to vault into third place with 15-4 record and 256.5 points. United States-based GM Rogelio Barcenilla, Jr. swept IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, 3-0, and FM Efren Bagamasbad downed Domingo Ramos, 2-1 to lead the Heroes of PECA president Dr. Fred Paez. GM John Paul Gomez pf Laguna and IM Paulo Bersamina of Caloocan battled to a 1.5-1.5 draw. With two straight losses, Caloocan dropped to fourth with 15-4 and 153.5 points. Manila Indios Bravos humbled Pampanga Checkers, 17-4, and Isabela, 16-5, to improve to 14-5. IM Marvin Miciano, CM Lourecel Acot, WNM Mira Mirano, IM Cris Ramayrat, IM Chito Garma, FM Edgardo Garma and CM Genghis Imperial carried the fight for Manila, which won 4-3 in blitz and 13-1 in rapid over Pampnga. Garma overpowered Cabellon, , Miciano bested Young, and Ramayrat whipped IM Emmanuel Senador in Manila's easy win over Isabela. WCM Christy Lamiel Bernales and Anwar Cabugatan were the only winners for Isabela as they beat Mirano and Imperial, respectively. Over at the Southern Division, Iloilo Kisela Knights outclassed Camarines Soaring Eagles, 16-5, and Mindoro Tamaraws, 19-2, to keep the lead with 15-4 win-loss record. WFM Cherry Ann Mejia crushed Ezraline Alvarez, 3-0, and NM Cesar Mariano nipped Carlo Lorena to lead Iloilo to victory over Camarines. Iloilo's top player, GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr , settled for a draw with Ellan Asuela, as did Karl Viktor Ochoa against Virgel Gil Ruaya in the first two boards. Also with 15-4 record is Team Paralympics, which humbled Mindoro, 13-8, before losing to guest team Penang Panthers-Malaysia, 10.5-10.5, 1-2 in Armageddon. Ed Andaya
