Ph reports 29 more O cases

By J.Lo

"The DOH is verifying the test results and health status of all passengers of these flights to determine if there are other confirmed cases or passengers who became symptomatic after arrival," the Department of Health (DOH) said in a statement Philippines  detected 29 more cases of the more transmissible Omicron coronavirus variant, bringing  total confirmed cases in the country to 43.

Of the new cases, DOH said 10 were returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs) while 19 were local cases with indicated addresses in National Capital Region (NCR).

Fifteen of the local cases are still active, three have recovered, while two are still being verified.

The latest run sequenced 48 samples on January 2, 2022.

Health officials see Omicron as  reason behind  sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in the country.

The DOH also reported 18 additional cases of  highly contagious Delta variant, bringing  total to 8,497.

Eight of these were ROFs and 19 are local cases had addresses indicated in NCR.

Due to this,  DOH again called on eligible individuals, especially senior citizens, those with comorbidities, and children, to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

"Vaccines are still our best defense and proven to be safe, effective, and free…let's not be agents of transmission and prevent further spread of  virus as more transmission means more mutations, at the earliest signs of symptoms, remember to isolate immediately and do the right test at the right time… let's keep our guards on for Omicron" it said.

DOH has documented 10,775 more COVID-19 infections, increasing  country's total tally to 2,871,745.

Of the 10,775 fresh cases, 10,688 (99%) occurred within  recent 14 days or from December 23, 2021, to January 5, 2022, the DOH said.

"The top regions with cases in  recent two weeks were NCR (7,420 or 69%), Region 4-A (1,719 or 16%) and Region 3 (798 or 7%)," it said.

Amid  sharp increase in cases,  government placed  NCR, as well as  provinces of Cavite, Bulacan, Rizal and Laguna under Alert Level 3 until January 15, 2022.

Under Alert Level 3, several establishments will be allowed to operate at 30% indoor venue capacity only for fully vaccinated individuals and 50% outdoor venue capacity, provided that all employees are fully vaccinated.

Face-to-face classes, contact sports, funfairs, perya, and casinos are among  activities and establishments that are prohibited under Alert Level 3.

Travelers going to NCR and Bulacan must present their COVID-19 vaccination cards at checkpoints before entering quarantine borders, the Philippine National Police (PNP)said.

In a statement,  PNP said  local government units of Bulacan and the cities of Metro Manila "have instructed police personnel to check for proof of vaccination of inbound travelers."

"Those without vaccination cards will be barred from entering and will be asked to go back," PNP chief General Dionardo Carlos said.

While acknowledging  traffic congestion in Bulacan during the first day of implementation, PNP maintained  strict measure only aims to curb  spread of COVID-19.

"The PNP is fully aware that movement must not be hampered, but non-essential travel can be controlled…just stay at home at this time when you have nothing important to do outside," Carlos said.

According to the PNP, they will deploy more cops to checkpoints with heavy volume of vehicles if needed.

Earlier,  mayors of Metro Manila agreed that unvaccinated people should stay at home unless they are buying and accessing essential goods and services.

The government has placed Metro Manila under Alert Level 3 from January 3 to 15;  Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal from January 5 to 15, 2022; and Laguna from January 7 to January 15, 2022 , amid  increase in COVID-19 cases.

Hundreds of delivery riders from different cities and municipalities lined up early Thursday morning for a drive-thru COVID-19 booster shot provided for free by the Manila city government.

Most of the riders who availed of  COVID-19 booster vaccine are not residents of Manila, said Dr. Poks Pangan, head of  Manila Health Department.

The city welcomes every rider to avail of the free COVID-19 booster shots, he added.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso said  hand-to-mouth-existence of delivery riders prompted the city government to create  system that will minimize disruption of work yet allow two-wheel workers to avail of  vaccine at their convenience.

The drive-thru system eliminated the trouble for delivery riders to queue up the whole day at a vaccination site and miss a day's worth of earning, he said.

"It's like they just conducted a delivery…if you look at it, after 2 minutes,  vaccination is done…they can go back to their livelihood," he said.

Earlier, similar effort was provided by the city government for haulers of produce in Divisoria.

The City Public Information Office reported that a total of 754 COVID-19 booster shots (Sinovac, Astra Zaneca, Pfizer, Moderna) were administered to drivers and workers of food haulers from different provinces who converge nightly at Divisoria for bulk deliveries of various produce.

Domagoso said with  favorable turnout in Divisoria, the activity will be repeated later.

Inoculation for booster shots at the Kartilya ng Katipunan for delivery riders will last until 5 in the afternoon Thursday.

Domagoso said they are already looking at the possibility of holding another day of drive-thru vaccination for delivery riders, so that more two-wheel workers can be provided with booster shots.
