380 Pinoys in Ukraine urged to contact Ph Embassy amid imminent Russian invasion

"The Philippine Embassy in Warsaw closely monitors situation of approximately 380 Filipino nationals living in Ukraine, most of whom are in Kyiv and its environs and are therefore located far from eastern border near Russia," Department of Foreign Affairs statement over the weekend said Philippine diplomats in Warsaw, Poland have reached out to nearly 400 Filipinos in Ukraine and asked them to immediately contact the embassy for any untoward incident in their areas amid reports of an imminent Russian invasion.
Manila's embassy in Warsaw has jurisdiction over Ukraine.
An attack by Russia on Ukraine "could come within days," US President Joe Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan noted "signs of Russian escalation, including new forces arriving at the Ukrainian border," adding that major assault could be launched "during the Olympics," slated to end on Feb. 20,2022.
The Department of Foreign Affairs assured that Philippine Embassy is in touch with the Filipinos in Ukraine in coordination with the Honorary Consulate General in Kyiv.
"They are encouraged to contact the embassy, report any untoward incident they might observe in their respective areas, and continue monitoring their Filipino friends through social media," the DFA said.
Hotline numbers of the embassy and Consulate General have been disseminated to the Filipino community, it added.
The Philippines has an existing labor deployment ban on Filipinos bound for Ukraine.
As these developed, more job opportunities abroad are available for nurses, truck drivers, and the IT sector amid COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration said over the weekend.
" Due to the, more and more job opportunities, particularly for our professionals like nurses, truck drivers…and of course in our IT sector there is a lot of demand when it comes to overseas employment," POEA deputy administrator Bong Plan said at the Laging Handa briefing.
While demand for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) was lower compared to the pre-pandemic period, their deployment is gradually increasing since 2021, Plan said.
"The industry that had quite high demand and easily recovered is the seafaring industry," Plan said.
Land-based deployment is recovering at a much slower pace.
Plan said POEA is already drafting its guidelines for resumption of deployment to Taiwan, following Taiwanese government's lifting of its ban on entry of migrant workers.
Under the guidelines, recruitment agencies of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) must shoulder required quarantine protocol expenses.
Taiwan will open its doors to migrant workers starting February 15,2022.
Plan said POEA estimated that there are about 40,000 OFWs set to be deployed in Taiwan.
"As of now, we have 'in the pipeline',awaiting processing, of about 5,000 workers going to Taiwan," he concluded.
