12K jobs available at Labor Day job fair —DOLE
By Nidz Godino
"We are hopeful that the two agreements could come to fruition within the term of President Duterte and mark a significant milestone in the history of Philippine-German bilateral relations," Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, said in an emailed statement around 12,000 job vacancies will be up for grabs at the Labor Day job fair organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Bello would be offering job opportunities for Filipinos nationwide on May 1.
Meanwhile, the Overseas Filipino Workers Hospital, which was established in Pampanga's San Fernando City, would also be operational on Labor Day.
Health services for employment will be free for OFWs, including medical certificates and laboratory exams.
Some services will also be free for the relatives of the OFWs, but the guidelines are still being ironed out.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier approved proposed implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the transition committee of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and its member agencies.
The creation of DMW was signed into law last December 2021. The objective of the agency is to streamline bureaucracy for overseas Filipinos with seven other agencies under several different departments "merging and transferring" to the proposed department which will now be tasked to "assume and perform all their powers and functions."
The Philippines is in talks with Germany for the recruitment of Filipino healthcare workers and other professionals.
Bello stressed negotiations cover recruitment of Filipinos in healthcare, hotel services, electrical engineering, mechanics, sanitation, heating and air conditioning, and child care.
Bello said Philippines has deployed 1,811 nurses under Triple Win Program provides an exemption on the cap on overseas deployment of Filipino healthcare workers since 2013.
The program was expanded to cover Global Skills Partnership program which provides access to German training through face-to-face, e-learning, and other alternative methods.
Germany is also in need of nurses trained in geriatric care, given the country's aging population.
Under its mandate, the DOLE serves as policy-advisory arm of the Executive Branch in the field of labor and employment, formulating and implementing policies and programs.
DOLE will provide a 10-day emergency employment for individuals affected by Taal Volcano's eruption.
In his report to President Duterte during pre-recorded Talk to the People televised Bello 1,006 families or 3,649 persons were affected by the volcano's phreatomagmatic bursts.
"Because of this, Mr. President, the immediate response of DOLE is to provide them work for 10 days and then give them a salary based on a minimum wage in that region," Bello said.
"The minimum wage in Region IV is P400 a day…so, they will work for 10 days, we will give them P4,000 for 10 days work…that is what we can immediately provide," he said.
The Labor chief said DOLE is prepared in case the number of people affected by Taal Volcano's unrest increases.
"We are prepared and I've instructed our finance officer to make ready and available P50 to P100 million if ever we need to help more of our fellowmen," Bello said.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said it has raised the alert status of Taal Volcano from Alert Level 2 increasing unrest to Alert Level 3 magmatic unrest.
PHIVOLCS said main crater of Taal Volcano "generated a short-lived phreatomagmatic burst" .
This was "followed by nearly continuous phreatomagmatic activity that generated plumes 1500 m accompanied by volcanic earthquake and infrasound signals," PHIVOLCS added.
More than 5,800 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the volcano's unrest, the Batangas Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said.
