VICE President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo
PRESIDENTIAL aspirant Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo signed a covenant with eight transport groups on Friday to address their concerns.
The eight transport groups were represented by Jaime Aguilar (National Confederation of Transport Workers Union), lawyer Vincent Rondaris (Nagkakaisang Samahan ng mga Nangangasiwa ng Panlalawigang Bus sa Pilipinas), Mar Valbuena (Manibela), Bernard Tuliao (Auto Pro Pangasinan), Juancho Caparino (ACTO), Antolin Pangan (Kapatiran sa Dalawang Gulong), Yuri Sarmiento (E-Jeepney Transport) and Leo Madamba (Lagro-Cubao Operators and Drivers Association).
According to the Robredo camp, the covenant is more of a commitment and guarantee that the Vice President will address issues like health, livelihood, safety, benefits, and representation.
"Si VP Leni ang nanguna sa pagtulong sa aming mga drivers noong nagsimula ang lockdown dahil marami sa amin ang nawalan ng hanapbuhay (When the lockdown began, VP Leni was the first to assist us, the drivers, because the majority of us had lost our jobs)," Yuri Sarmiento of E-Jeepney Transport said.
The covenant includes providing livelihood for drivers and operators in case they lose their jobs due to unforeseen circumstances, modernizing public transport, medical assistance and adequate training in road safety.
"Kahit pa hindi pa ako Pangulo, ginawa ko 'yung mga puwedeng gawin para kahit papaano maibsan 'yung kahirapan na pinagdadaanan ninyo. Alam ko na 'yung sektor ninyo, isa sa pinakatinamaan during the pandemic, na marami tayong puwedeng gawin para makaahon ulit kayo (Even though I am not the president, I tried my best to assist you so that your burden would be eased. I understand that your sector was the hardest hit by the pandemic, and we will do everything we can to help you recover)," Robredo said.
