Christ is Risen!
On a warm May evening, 40 volunteers led by ACOY Victorian Charity Committee met to put together charity packs at the St George's Cathedral Hall in Thornbury. The items, including toiletries, food essentials and socks, more than 6600 in total, were donated by the Melbourne parishes throughout Lent, and the new target of 550 packs (up from 200 in 2021) was ably met.
The night began with a speech from Gavin Smith, a parishioner of Holy Transfiguration Mission in Belgrave South, and manager of Soupees, who shared his experiences serving the poor with his weekly soup kitchen in Upwey. The committee was reminded of the desperate situations in which many people find themselves and after hearing his heart-warming stories, they rolled up their sleeves with rekindled zeal and made up a production line, quickly working out the most efficient way to bag each pack's 10 items, under the watchful leadership of Sara Elbazi and Abouna Jean. The final step in the process was to sort the packs into boxes, and these were later passed on to various charities who will distribute them to those most in need.
The night finished with a dinner of noodles and drinks, laughter and fellowship. We give all thanks and glory to God for a smooth process of putting out the call for donations, organising their collection and finally, completing the task with a successful packing evening. May God guide us to further good works for His glory!
