A hispanophile is a person who admires Spain, Spanish-speaking countries and their people, and Spanish culture. Which only means that I am not a hispanophile. Let me expound.
I am not exactly an admirer of Spain nor other Spanish-speaking countries. I am unfamiliar with the trends going on there right now. I don't know who their famous celebrities are, am totally unfamiliar with their pop culture, their latest fashion, cuisine, books, etc. If I don't do any Google search, I won't even be able to tell you the names of Spain's top leaders, except for its king (who I heard is not worthy of his royal lineage).
An opportunity to go to Spain or other Spanish-speaking countries is truly tempting, but it doesn't excite me that much. To tell you the truth, it will excite me more if an opportunity to go to Batanes, Basilan, or IloÃlo (my dream destination) opens up.
What I truly admire, however, is the Spanish Empire of old. What I am in love with is what Spain did to our country's past. That past is what gave form to our national identity. And that is what I have been defending all these years.
So I guess it would be more apt if you describe me as a "Filipinophile", if ever such a word exists.
