To be honest, saying that I was filled with amazement the first time I went to Sagada wayback 2019 is really an understatement. The uncommercialized municipality enchanted me to its core that even though some things have happened after that trip, I could not neglect the fact that it is one of the best places I've visited here in the Philippines, and one that I am proud to recommend to those who want to get rest from the chaos of the city. Thus, I really wanted to bring Jeff up there.
Finally, Sagada opened its doors to tourists without the need to present a negative RT-PCR result for the fully-vaxxed. Kaya di na namin pinalagpas ang pagkakataon.
Now, if you're planning to go there very soon, here's a quick guide on the step-by-step procedure that you should follow.
1. The first thing you need to do is to book an accommodation by checking the list of accredited guesthouses at Umali Kayo Sagada Online Tourist Registration Portal. The information there is complete as to contact details, but you have to do your own research as to rates and other relevant information to book with the one that is best to your liking. They will be providing you the access code per person for QR pass registration, which is usually being given two days prior to your trip.
This THE HOBBIT inspired board and lodging is something that is superficially attractive to look at. Sa true lang, hindi exag. It is really visually appealing in every side and corner so we had no regrets for choosing this one except from the idea that its location is somewhere uphill. Di kami prepared ni Jeff physically. Though eventually, we realized that it is a blessing in disguise since the tours require physical stamina.
2. Buy a bus ticket at Coda Lines via Bookaway. It is an express bus with one main stop over for dining and two quick stops for gasoline loading somewhere in Nueva Viscaya and ATM withdrawal at Bontoc. It has a toilet inside, and based on my experience, it is cleaner than the ones outside. So feel free to use it when needed.
The rate is around 2k per pax for a roundtrip ticket. The first trip is 9pm, but in reality, the bus departs at 10pm due to some MMDA ordinances regarding provincial buses.
3. Once your accommodation provided you the access code per person, register at Umali Kayo site to get your QR pass. Then you're good to go!
The land travel is approximately 11 hours so be prepared to entertain yourself in the event that you'll be having a hard time to get some sleep.
Better set your alarm around 6am, but make sure not to distract other passengers. There, you will see the famous Banaue Rice Terraces closely.
4. At the boundary of Sagada, you have to go down for a while to present your vaccination card and a valid ID, then pay 100pesos for registration. They have a database there of all tourists registered to enter the town including your accommodation for validation and verification purposes.
5. Then for around 15-minutes more, you will reach the Municipal Hall and it's time to unload all your things. On the left side facing the Municipal Hall, you will find the Tourism Office where you can check all available tours in Sagada. Note that due to pandemic, tours are arranged in a ratio of 7 tourists is to 1 tour guide. If you're in a big group, you might need to book for two guides. On the other hand, if you're a solo traveler or with a few companion, you may leave your contact number in the Tourism Office desk for possible joiner/s.
You have to pay 150 pesos for every tour, then the balance will be paid directly to the guide after each tour.
Sea of Clouds
Marlboro Hills is a must. It is where you will witness the most beautiful sea of clouds ever. Due to limited time, we chose this one and the Hanging Coffins. (Details on the next blog!)
Hanging Coffins
There're a lot more tours to choose from depending on your capability since some requires... lakas at tatag. Char. If you're looking for adventures and buwis-buhay activities, madami dun.
Sagada is a walk town, and walking is an essential part of the Sagada experience. There's no public transportation, so going in and out of your accommodation to dine outside and buy souvenirs really require a lot of steps. Better be prepared for it.
For updates, follow the Facebook pages of Sagada Municipality and Sagada Tourism. They might release changes in the requirements and instructions depending on the Covid-19 Alert Level of the Mountain Province.
I hope you'll enjoy your next tour! Well, I'm pretty sure you will!
