Hold special election to fill seat vacated by Remulla
By Nidz Godino
To fill seat vacated by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla the House of Representatives adopted resolution calling on Commission on Elections to conduct special election in the seventh district of Cavite
Introduced by Speaker Martin Romualdez and two other lawmakers, House Resolution 100, which certified existence of vacancy and urged Comelec to hold special election, was approved via voice vote. Under Republic Act 6645, Comelec is mandated to conduct special election if vacancy occurs in the Senate at least 18 months or in the House of Representatives at least one year before next regular election for members of Congress.
The House made the move day after it designated Romualdez as caretaker of the legislative district.
Sought for comment, Romualdez's office said in statement that the Speaker "will remain as caretaker until after new representative in the seventh district of Cavite is elected."
Remulla's House seat became vacant after President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. appointed him to head the Department of Justice.
Meanwhile, former senator and current Batangas Representative Ralph Recto was elected Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Recto's election as Deputy Speaker ensued after oath taking of Las Piñas Representative Camille Villar, also as one of House's Deputy Speakers.
Recto then took oath before Speaker Martin Romualdez of Leyte. Present were his wife, former Batangas congresswoman Vilma Santos, and their son, Ryan Christian.
Recto backed former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno during 2022 presidential race.
Two other lawmakers were also elected and took their oath as Deputy Speaker , Aurelio Gonzales of Pampanga and Duke Frasco of Cebu.
Gonzales is from PDP-Laban party, which backed Romualdez's speakership bid.
Frasco is the husband of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and the son-in-law of Cebu governor Gwen Garcia.
Both Gonzales and Frasco supported now-President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for 2022 presidential race.
With the election of Recto, Gonzales and Frasco, there are now nine Deputy Speakers, which also include,Gloria Arroyo of Pampanga (House Senior Deputy Speaker),Camille Villar of Las Piñas,Isidro Ungab of Davao,Roberto Puno of Antipolo,Christine Singson of Ilocos Sur and Raymond Mendoza of TUCP party-list.
