P310M plus paid to EDSA Carousel operators
By J.Lo
"In a span of two weeks, we fixed their payout…now we are in week 10 so we were able to fix almost a month of payment issues…we have released more than P310 million for that," Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) chairperson Atty. Cheloy Garafil said, noting that the program is now on its 13th week LTFRB has released more than P310 million in funds for payment to the bus operators of the EDSA Carousel after it was delayed for weeks.
Garafil said they have "enough funds" to cater to the salaries of the bus operators under the government's free ridership program.
"They were really thankful yesterday because their payment was expedited in just a span of two weeks…they appreciated it, that's why they committed to increase the number of buses on the EDSA busway, especially during rush hour," she said.
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. earlier this month extended the free rides at the EDSA Bus Carousel until December 2022.
Under the service contracting program, public utility vehicle (PUV) operators and drivers who will participate in the government's free ridership program will receive a one-time payout and weekly payments based on number of kilometers they traveled per week, whether they have passengers or not.
