ACT hit August class resumption, vacation pay for teachers
By J.Lo
"In the opening of classes, the DepEd again committed a violation because teachers were supposed to be on vacation after June 24," Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) called on Department of Education (DepEd) to pay educators for their lack of vacation as School Year 2022-2023 is set to start on August 22. ACT chairman Vladimir Quetua said DepEd committed "violation" in issuing DepEd Order 34 that sets schedule of resumption of classes.
"So if the classes will open on August 22, one concern here is that teachers will have no vacation, so our appeal here is to pay teachers who exceeded their term which we call Proportional Vacation Pay," he stressed.
In a statement last week, the Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) urged government to move opening of incoming school year aimed to either mid-September or October to give teachers enough time to rest.
TDC National Chairman Benjo Basas said between June and August, many teachers remain busy with various school-related activities such as graduation, completion ceremonies, and preparation for performance ratings, among others.
Meanwhile, Quetua expressed support for the suggestion of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to review the country's education curriculum to address job mismatch.
However, he noted that teachers and students were not consulted about this.
"What should be reviewed about K to 12…if we will really look at it, the curriculum is not really catering to the needs of the Filipino people," he said.
"Imagine we are an agricultural country, but most of the strands here are for corporate and market-driven economy," he added.
Quetua said review should only be limited to medium of instructions and should also cover bringing back subjects that were removed like Philippine History, Filipino Language, and Panitikan.
He also said government should review the education curriculum to benefit the country and not foreign countries.
