The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local government units have distributed P1 billion worth of assistance to families affected by Severe Tropical Storm Florita.
At the Palace briefing, DSWD Undersecretary Marco Bautista said the cash assistance was given in Regions 1, 2, 3, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and the National Capital Region (NCR).
"Nagkaroon ng total assistance from DSWD as well as local government units ng P1,113,000,466 na ito po ay naipamigay sa mga affected families as well as sa mga evacuation centers natin," he said.
(There was total assistance of P1.1 billion from the DSWD and LGUs that was given to affected families as well as evacuation centers.)
He added that LGUs also gave P82,000 as part of food packs, hygiene kits, clothing, and kitchen kits in evacuation centers.
"So far umaalis na po sila sa evacuation center at umuuwi na po sila sa mga kani-kanilang bahay po at wala na rin po mga flash flood so far ngayon (they have left the evacuation center and returned to their homes. There were no more flash floods too)," he said.
Bautista said there were 2,313 displaced families from Regions 1 to 3, CAR, and NCR. He said 620 families were also preemptively evacuated in Northern Luzon.
Meanwhile, DSWD Secretary Erwin Tulfo said four families whose homes were destroyed in Sarangani will receive P10,000 worth of cash assistance.
"Apat po na bahay ang nawasak pero wala pong nasaktan. Nakatira ngayon, pansamantalang nanunuluyan 'yung mga pamilya doon sa kani-kanilang kamag-anakan," Tulfo said.
(Four houses were destroyed but no one was hurt. They are staying with their relatives right now.)
PAGASA earlier announced that all tropical cyclone wind signals have been lifted as Florita moves towards Southern China.
Educational assistance
The DSWD secretary said P154 million has been distributed so far for 50,000 students.
Meanwhile, Tulfo clarified that only children of overseas Filipino workers, persons with disabilities, and students in crisis situations are qualified for the cash assistance program for indigent students.
He said beneficiaries of the 4Ps are not qualified as well as those with scholarships with local government units and government agencies.
"Ang purpose lang po nitong educational assistance is para doon sa mga bata na kailangan po ng school supplies or pambayad po ng school fees (the purpose of the educational assistance is for children who need school supplies or payment for school fees)," he said.
He earlier said that the agency would provide P1,000 for elementary students, P2,000 for high school students, P3,000 for senior high school students, and P4,000 for college students or vocational courses.
Tulfo said the DSWD will process getting back the educational cash assistance given to 4Ps beneficiaries in October or November.
"Pero hindi pa ho namin 'yan inaasikaso ngayon. Probably around October or November pa ho namin maasikaso para sa refund. Pero kung mag re-refund man po ay hindi po namin bibiglain," he said.
(We are not yet processing it. Probably around October or November. But we will not rush the claiming back of the funds.)--AOL, GMA News
