Protecting this mountain range needs commitment and participation of everyone ...

With the clamor to protect a mountain range within Davao Region, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region XI, through its Community Environment and Natural Resources Office of New Corella, conducted a 4-day Protected Area Suitability Assessment (PASA) on August 16-19, 2022, in line with the establishment of Pantaron Mountain Range (PMR) as a protected area.

The area manifests high ecological value and diffuses immense benefits to the community, it said in the report posted at the official FB page of DENR Davao.

It further said that Pantaron Mountain Range encompasses two adjacent provinces of Davao del Norte in Region XI and Bukidnon in Region X. In the province of Davao del Norte, it covers almost 32,000 hectares, wherein the municipality of Talaingod covers the largest land area.

PMR serves as the last remaining old growth and residual forest in Davao del Norte; and is identified as the headwater source of Tagum-Libuganon River, Lasang River, and Davao River in Region XI.

The conducted assessment includes site observation of the biophysical features of the Pantaron Mountain Range in terms of its geological formation, hydrologic value, vegetative cover, types of ecosystems, and identification of flora and fauna; which all form part as bases for its PA establishment.

Moreover, during the conduct of PASA, several Dipterocarp species, Almaciga, Malabayabas, and species of Nepenthes, as well as sightings of moss, lichens, several bird species, bats, and insects, were sighted.

The DENR will continue to put conscious efforts to preserve the Pantaron Mountain Range, its natural ecosystems including the wildlife species habituating in it.

But with the persistent threats, securing our environment, natural resources and ecosystem services has always been a challenge. Thus, the Department calls for the participation and commitment of our partner agencies, stakeholders, and lowland and upland communities to help carry through the endeavor. After all, attaining sustainable natural resources and a functional ecosystem needs full range of help from everyone.
