My Filipina wife comes from a village situated very close to a jungle, in the Sierra Madre Mountains, yet, like most Filipinos, she is not into adventure and so, while in the Philippines I didn't have that much of a chance to explore the rainforest.
Little did I know that there's plenty of jungle-like places in the outskirts of the city I live in!
The municipality of Rome encompasses a very large area, and in some remote outskirts of the city there's plenty of rivers that flow through soft tufa rock that, due to erosion, form very deep gorges.
Most of those gorges have been explored very little, as the deep and steep tufa walls are prone to landslides, the vegetation is very intricate and thick and there's plenty of wild animals there, including wolves and wild boars.
And, because of this, those gorges have very little to envy to any Philippine jungle!
I started exploring this kind of environment during the Covid-19 pandemic, when we were only allowed to travel within the municipality...and it was love at first sight.
So, now I no longer need to fret over the possibility that during my next trip to the Philippines I'll be much more likely (as usual) to see shopping malls than jungles... we've got jungles here!

This waterfall is situated about 3 km from a city-bus stop!
