Prince Harry's just released memoir "Spare" has set a sales record in its first day of publication.
Penguin Random House announced that the first day sales for the memoir hit 1.4 million copies. This selling pace is a record for non-fiction from a publication house that also distributed Barack and Michelle Obama's books. The sales figure includes all book formats such as paper, audio, and electronic.
Some bookstores in London opened at midnight last Tuesday to anticipate the high demand. Spanish translations of the book were released days earlier, garnering clamor and attention from the global media.
"Spare" is translated into 16 languages and is sold worldwide.
Random House also announced that 2 million copies were printed for the US market. Now the 410-page memoir has gone back to press for more printing to meet the demand.
The Duke of Sussex holds nothing back in the memoir as he reveals what goes on behind his care-free image. He also delves into the death of his mother, coping with grief, and finding love.
"'Spare' is the story of someone we may have thought we already knew, but now we can truly come to understand Prince Harry through his own words," Gina Centrello, president and publisher of the Random House Group, said in a statement.
New York Times critic Alexandra Jacob labeled the book as "frank and funny," and sometimes consumed by Harry's anger at the British press. Louis Bayard of The Washington Post found the book "juicy, humorous, resentful, and sad."
