4 important roles in every tech-voc student's support system

Napaka-importante ang pagkakaroon ng strong support system, lalo na kung ikaw ay isang babaeng tech-voc student. Napag-usapan na natin sa previous articles ang iba't-ibang challenges na nararanasan ng mga babae sa tech-voc. Ngayon, we'll look at how the different people in their lives can help them get over these hurdles, ayon sa mga roles nila bilang miyembro ng isang support system.

Every tech-voc student builds their personal support systems with their families as the foundation, kasi sila talaga yung guaranteed to stick with them kahit anong mangyari. Hindi lang sila taga-bigay ng financial support; families can be counted on to provide valuable emotional support din. 

Having strong familial support is especially important for women in TVET. They need to feel like their family trusts their decisions and will help them recover in case they make mistakes.

Kasama rin dito ang mga non-traditional families! While many women rely on their parents for these roles, many more count on other relatives like titos, titas, tsaka mga lola at lolo nila. Marami ring mga babae na may mga found families composed of close friends or co-workers, and they are just as valid a support system as any.

Hindi lang technical skills ang tinuturo nina ma'am at sir; they can mentor students as professionals din. They can help them develop soft skills that are crucial for success sa tech-voc, tulad ng communication at problem-solving skills. 

Malaking tulong din sila sa paghahanap ng trabaho. Dahil kilala na sila at respetado sa kanilang mga industriya, may maiaambag sila bilang references sa job applications ng mga fresh grads.  

Pero una sa lahat, it's their responsibility to make women feel like they belong sa tech-voc, both as students and as professionals. This includes creating an inclusive environment kung saan welcome ang mga babae sa traditionally male-dominated fields. Malaki kasi ang role nila sa pag-develop ng mga cultural changes needed to improve gender equality sa mga iba't ibang industriya. Dinadala kasi ng bawat estudyante ang kultura ng kanilang classroom sa mga trabaho nila. Kung hindi inclusive sa mga kababaihan ang classroom culture, dadami rin ang hindi inclusive na graduates sa mga papasukang workplace.

Kaya dapat tinuturo din ng mga guro kung paano ma-overcome ng mga ibang estudyante ang gender-based biases nila. Siyempre, kailangan ding aware si teacher sa sarili niyang gender biases at kino-correct niya ang mga 'to. Malaki rin kasi ang epekto ng pag-project ng mga biases na 'to sa quality ng pagtuturo nila. For example, naniniwala 'yung mga ibang teachers na lalaki dapat ang lider, kaya hindi sila pumipili ng babaeng lider sa mga groupwork–kahit na kayang-kaya ni Ate Girl ang mamuno.

As more and more students learn in inclusive environments and enter the job market, mababawasan din ang gatekeeping at harassment sa tech-voc. Ika nga ng isang 34-year old technician sa Taiwan na aming nakapanayam na si Janice: "Para sa akin, as long as kumpleto ang paa at kamay ko, hindi naman basehan ang gender sa trabaho."

3. School Administrators at Employers Bilang Facilitators

Importante din ang non-faculty staff sa pagbibigay ng suporta sa mga tech-voc students dahil trabaho nila ang nagbibigay sa mga estudyante ng kakayahang mag-aral. Kasama dito ang pagbibigay ng scholarships, counseling, at career guidance. Their job is to give students everything they need in order to thrive as a student, kaya hindi dapat mahiya ang mga tech-voc students to visit the different offices ng school admin and see how they can help.

The school admin should create an environment kung saan safe ang mga babae. They should have strong non-discriminatory policies in place, and take action whenever students feel like nata-target sila ng gender discrimination. May karapatan dapat ang isang estudyante na ireklamo sa admin ang ibang mga estudyante, guro, o empleyado ng eskwela na gumagawa ng sitwasyon na 'di komportable para sa kababaihan. At kung may kakulangan man ang school staff in terms of gender sensitivity, dapat open ang admin to provide the necessary training para ma-feel ng students na committed ang eskwela in creating a safe space for women.

Sa mga naghahanap ng trabaho o nagtatrabaho na, positive enabler din dapat si boss. Hindi lang siya ang "guro" sa trabaho, kundi siya din ang responsible for creating the safe space women need to thrive sa non-traditional TVET path.

Ang mga employer na magandang pasukan ay 'yung mga nagsusumikap na magkaroon ng gender equality sa kanilang workforce, both through hiring practices and anti-discrimination policies. Kasama dito ang pag-hire ng babaeng HR staff na pwedeng mag-handle ng gender-based issues; yung mga ibang babae kasi, feel nila na mas safe mag-file ng reklamo kung babae din ang kausap nila. Another option employers can provide is an anonymous reporting system para ma-ensure ang safety ng kanilang mga empleyado. 

Employers can also enable women to succeed by hiring more women and giving them the same rights and benefits na na-eenjoy ng male employees. Maraming babaeng na-didiscourage pumasok sa TVET kasi may discriminatory hiring practices ang ibang mga industriya. May mga workplace na pinapaboran ang mga aplikanteng lalaki kaysa sa mga babae, kahit na pareho lang naman ang qualifications nila.

Ayon kay Caloy (35 years old), isang graduate ng Electronic Product Assembly Servicing (EPAS) NCII, may mga employers na walang tiwala sa babaeng technician, kahit na pareho lang naman ang edukasyon nila at ng mga aplikanteng lalaki.

"Sa klase namin, wala kaming problema sa mga lalaking classmates," sabi niya. "Nagkaroon lang ng problem nung mag-aaply na sa trabaho as technicians. Parang may doubt 'yung employers if kaya ba naman gawin 'yung trabaho."

'Yung mga ibang employers daw, pinagawan daw ng skills demonstration ang mga aplikanteng babae, pero hindi naman 'to pinagawa sa mga lalaki. Unfair, 'di ba?

At the same time, there are workplaces that do hire more women, pero hindi sila pantay sa mga lalaking empleyado in terms of benefits. Malaki ang wage gap between genders sa mga male-dominated fields, so unti-unting nawawalan ng ganang tumagal sa industriya ang mga babaeng empleyado.

By giving women the exact same opportunities and benefits as they do men, employers send the message na oo, pwedeng umasenso ang mga babae sa tech-voc. At dahil dito, tataas rin ang female enrolment sa TVET. Kung sure ang tao na makakatagal siya sa isang industriya at magiging masaya siya rito, papasok talaga siya sa mga kurso nito. 

4. Peers Bilang Motivators

Napakalaki ng role ng peers sa support system ng isang tech-voc student. Dahil sa kanila, namo-motivate ang mga estudyante na mag-aral nang mabuti. Yung iba, nae-engganyo kung may healthy competition sila sa mga kaklase nila. Yung iba naman, namo-motivate ng mutual support, tulad ng group study sessions at hiraman ng notes. At kapag haggard na haggard na dahil sa lagapak na requirements, nagpapagaan din ng loob ang pagkakaroon ng karamay. 

Malaki rin ang naitutulong ng kapwa estudyante sa pag-develop ng safe spaces for women. A healthy friend group not only protects women from discrimination, but also isn't afraid to correct themselves kung na-realize nila na may mga gender bias din sila. They need to have their back laban sa sarili nilang blind spots, pati na rin sa mga blind spots ng ibang tao.

At syempre, dapat andiyan din ang barkada kapag kailangang mag-time out muna sa pagiging estudyante ang isang tao. Having fun is healthy; bumabalik ang gana at focus sa pag-aaral ng isang tech-voc student kapag nage-enjoy siya nang paminsan-minsan.
