Experts warn PH next Ukraine for EDCA

"I would like to express my sincere opposition to militarization of Philippines due to full implementation of EDCA because of whims and caprices of US, together with its allies in Asia-Pacific region," Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies Vice President for External Affairs Prof. Anna Malindog-Uy warned Philippines should learn from experience of Ukraine,country allegedly being used as proxy of United States in its campaign against China. During Pandesal Forum, Uy said Filipinos should oppose establishment of Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites to save country in case war between US and China breaks out. Uy also criticized Defense Officer in Charge Carlito Galvez Jr., after he dismissed opposition by local government officials over plans to establish additional US military facilities in their respective provinces.
"We should say no to full implementation of EDCA and four EDCA bases facing Taiwan and disputed South China Sea… should say no to enhanced joint patrol in West Philippines Sea between US, Japan, and Australia that might provoke our giant neighbor, China… recipe for disaster in disputed waters… no to deployment of more military assets on Philippine soil," Uy stressed.
Uy said government should allow public debate on issue to determine true sentiments of people.
"This war US has been trying to instigate for longest time, worse comes to worst, will be at expense of our country and Asia… ramification of this impending war between two superpowers will be fatal and most devastating to any country t Uncle Sam will use as hostage," Uy added.
She added Philippines should not leave its fate to US.
"To be used as proxy and new colony of US is not joke…basically means as nation, we are not truly independent…our fate as nation is not ours and controlled by an empire, saddest realization for every Filipino," she noted.
Uy said possible World War 3 might erupt with heightened tension between US and China.
"We are in most dangerous political situation since 1945… facing world where for every possible miscalculation in three flashpoints in regions, namely South China Sea, Taiwan Strait and Korean Peninsula, world would be on brink of World War 3… impending war would not be same kind of war humanity had experienced before… most catastrophic and fatal," Uy said.
For his part, Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino Chairman Emeritus Ka Leody de Guzman said despite being an ally for so many years, US failed to help country in addressing poverty in the country.
"If US really wants to help us, why do we still have 23 million Filipinos who experience hunger, 7 million Filipinos who have no homes, and 4 million Filipinos who are unemployed?" de Guzman said.
On the other hand, United Filipino Consumers and Commuters President Ka RJ Javellana demanded resignation of Galvez.
"Galvez should resign," he said.
Galvez has said Philippine government "is aiming to achieve an optimal number and locations of EDCA sites to maximize their coverage of Philippine archipelago."
