Ph, USAF revive jt exercise Cope Thunder after decades
By Nidz Godino
"It provides unique opportunity to integrate forces and improve interoperability between Philippines and United States," Pacific Air Forces Public Affairs said Philippine and United States air forces have revived Cope Thunder joint exercise 23 years after it was stopped in 199.
In statement, Pacific Air Forces Public Affairs said exercise is set to start May 1 until May 12.
This will be first iteration of Cope Thunder in the Philippines since 1990.
Opening of Cope Thunder will include primary flight operations over Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines.
Cope Thunder aims to provide bilateral fighter training with Philippine and US air forces and improve their combined interoperability.
Around 160 US Air Force members are expected to fly as well as maintain and support more than 12 aircraft from 35 Fighter Wing, Misawa Air Base in Japan for exercise.
Armed Force of the Philippines personnel will exchange tactics, techniques and procedures while improving interoperability during exercise.
Cope Thunder began in the Philippines in 1976.
It was moved to Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska in 1992 and eventually renamed Red Flag Alaska, Pacific Air Forces Public Affairs said.
Cope Thunder was moved to Eielson from Clark Air Base in the Philippines in 1992 after 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo forced curtailment of its operations.
In 1991, Philippine Senate also rejected renewal of US base lease in the country.
Bello says fourth OFW died in Taiwan factory fire, no timeline for repatriation yet
The number of Filipinos who died following a food factory fire in Taiwan has increased to four, Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) head Silvestre Bello III said Friday.
Bello identified the fourth victim as Maricris Fernando, who hails from La Union.
"OFW Maricris Fernando from La Union succumbed to severe carbon monoxide poisoning," Bello told GMA News Online in a text message.
He earlier said Fernando was in the intensive care unit (ICU) and had to undergo dialysis because her urine discharge was very minimal.
The other OFWs who died were Renato Larua of Cavite; Nancy Revilla of Marinduque, and Aroma Miranda of Tarlac.
Bello said the authorities have assured aid to the kin of the OFWs who died, and are working for their immediate repatriation.
However, there is no definite timeline yet for repatriation.
"The repatriation depends on the result of the embalment of the bodies and compliance with the legal documents," Bello added.
Other OFWs who were injured in the Lian-Hwa Foods Corporation food fire in Changhua county, central part of Taiwan last Tuesday include Sheila May Abas, Jessie Boy Samson, Rodel Uttao, and Santiago Suba Jr. They are now in stable condition
