Mla council hit Ch-funded bridge
By Nidz Godino
AT least five Manila legislators opposed construction of North and South Harbor Bridge in Tondo. Manila city District 5 Councilors Mon Yupangco, Jaybee Hizon, Charry Ortega, Bobby Espiritu and Ricky Isip manifested in separate privilege speeches their rejection of bridge, which would connect Barangays 20 and 649 or Baseco Compound.
Bridge is seen to displace 1,292 families living in Baseco, according to Yupangco.
Hizon criticized bridge, he said under Build, Build, Build infrastructure program of Duterte administration and funded by loan from Chinese government.
Real purpose of bridge is not for public but for trucking and shipping firms in Baseco and Road 10, Hizon alleged.
He also demanded Department of Public Works and Highways build other end of bridge on lot owned by agency in Baseco so structure would not displace residents.
Espiritu said bridge would land on two-car lane in Baseco that would eventually become "chokehold." He stressed bridge could force demolition of Hermenegildo Atienza Elementary School. Councilors spoke up during city council session after holding dialogue with Barangay 649 chairperson Diana Espinosa, members of civic group in the community and with Manila Reps. Irwin Tieng and Ernix Dionisio. Officials of Barangay 649 previously declared their opposition to the bridge.
