Female Construction workers eyed
By J.Lo
"There is shortage," Cebu Contractors Association (CCA) Inc., president Francis Gerard Cañedo.is explaining while this problem has been going on in last few years, it has worsened as young people are now attracted to other livelihood or employment opportunities.
Contractors are now considering employing women in construction industry to augment worsening shortage of construction workers in Cebu.
While this is nationwide crisis in construction sector, Cebu's fast recovering construction sector is challenged with dwindling number of skilled workers, said Cañedo.
According to Cañedo, some contractors are starting to train women to acquire skills in construction sector but only in specific, lighter working assignments like painting, among others.
Manpower shortage, Cañedo said is already affecting their ability to bid on projects, complete construction on time and meet increasing demand especially after pandemic.
"New breed of workers is now attracted to work in business process management companies," Cañedo stressed.
Besides, skilled construction workers are already getting employment abroad like in Middle East and other countries.
Aside from hiring women, construction industry players are also investing on technology, including use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to replace some works previously performed by humans.
For instance, for 10 crane units, it is now manned only by five people instead of 10 workers, shared CCA auditor Kevin Sean Lim of Zumyrphil Construction Inc.
Today, Cebu contractors are no longer sourcing their manpower in province but from different islands of Visayas and Mindanao, because labor costs here have become expensive, Cañedo added.
Both Cañedo and Lim agreed commercialization has really affected industry.
"We suffer from this image of blue-collar industry where people see no bright future…tey'd, younger generation, rather go to glamorous fields like becoming barista or vlogger, to name few….our skilled workers are being exported and we can't compete with international market, especially on how much they are offering," Cañedo added.
What keeps construction industry meet rising demand for project and comply with schedules is use of advanced technology and hiring available lady workers to learn craft.
