RCC considers varied gestures for 'Our Father' prayer- CBCP
By J.Lo
"Faithful can recite or sing it with gesture that can best help them to experience and express themselves as God's children," Roman Catholic Archbishop Victor Bendico, chairman of CBC Episcopal Commission on Liturgy, in circular said "For many of faithful, it is in raising their hands in orans posture they can express filial love and reverence contained in prayer. Nothing in Scriptures nor in Christian tradition of worship forbids them from doing so," he stressed The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has officially declared Catholic churchgoers may choose their preferred gesture while reciting or singing "Our Father" prayer during Mass.
Statement comes in response to requests from several prelates for official declaration regarding appropriate gesture to be used while praying "Our Father."
CBCP liturgy body said worshipers may use different gestures, such as raised hands, joined hands or holding each other's hands, during recitation of prayer.
Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula agreed with Bendico, saying that people should respect decision of t faithful on gestures they take.
"This should be done in harmony with nature of prayer and in deference to others who are present in the celebration," Advincula said.
The Lord's Prayer, according to the cardinal, "is not only prayer formula but program of Christian life founded on Good News Jesus proclaimed, lived, and died for."
"Therefore, demands from us conversion of life that makes will of the Father the foundation of our life… fruit of this is our love of our brothers and sisters," he said.
