"There are visa refusals from embassies…they fear that there would be TNTs ,Tago Nang Tago..we are on our last attempt to reconsider applications for visas of some 50 applicants that have been denied," Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Youth (CBCP-ECY) executive secretary and priest Ramon Jade Licuanan said TNT is Filipino term for Filipino for an illegal alien who is in hiding, CBCP is on its "last attempt" to appeal denied visas of some 50 youth delegates to this year's World Youth Day, global gathering of young Catholics typically attended by popes.
In interview, representative of CBCP-ECY said embassies had denied visas of some 50 youth pilgrims due to concerns that they would become undocumented immigrants.
This year's World Youth Day will be held in Lisbon, Portugal from August 1 to 6. Pope Francis is expected to attend event, according to the Vatican.
Licuanan said this stems from "several cases of pilgrims becoming TNTs" decade ago.
"There is pattern that whenever host is European country,.. Madrid, Italy, Rome, France, there are many becoming TNTs," Licuanan stressed.
CBCP commission will be sending 270-member delegation to five-day event in August.
As of June 30, World Youth Day organizers estimate more than 600,000 people have already registered for event to meet and pray with Pope Francis.
St. Pope John Paul II initiated event in 1985, and since then week-long congregation has drawn hundreds of thousands of young people from diverse parts of the world.
