Teves to face raps 2019 Negros killings

CRIMINAL cases would be filed before Manila Regional Trial Court against suspended Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr..
State prosecutors have found sufficient evidence to file multiple murder charges against Teves in connection with killing of three persons in the province in 2019, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said.
Remulla said deaths of Michael Dungog, former board member in third district of Negros Oriental and former agent of National Bureau of Investigation; Lester Bato, bodyguard of Basay mayoral candidate Cliff Cordoval, and Pacito Libron, alleged hitman, sowed fear among residents of Negros Oriental.
He said there had been many other killings related to politics, among other reasons.
Department of Justice (DOJ) said complaints against Teves were based on extrajudicial confession of Gemuel Hobro, one of the respondents in cases.
DOJ said Hobro's confession indicates he was part of group hired by Teves to carry out killings.
Hobro claimed he was present during three incidents and identified those behind killings.
DOJ said Hobro's connections with Teves and other suspects have been established, which confirmed political and personal motives for murders.
Hobro was "conditionally" admitted to DOJ's witness protection program due to significance of his testimony.
