DOTr' to decide fate of EDSA Bus Carousel
By Nidz Godino
"It is DOTr that must decide whether or not EDSA Bus Carousel must be removed," Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes said within purview of Department of Transportation (DOTr) to decide on whether or not to remove EDSA Bus Carousel.
Government has spent funds to build infrastructure for new bus system installed along EDSA's innermost lane and using some of Metro Rail Transit Line 3's emergency exits as bus stops and bicycle lane, Artes said in statement.
MMDA recently took over dispatching buses along EDSA Bus Carousel, Artes said enables average deployment of 600 buses a day from Monumento to ParaƱaque Integrated Terminal Exchange and back.
EDSA Bus Carousel halved time of bus passengers along EDSA, he maintained.
Artes issued statement after Mega Manila Consortium, composed of operators of city buses, proposed reclaiming two outermost lanes of EDSA, including bicycle lane, for buses and reinstating 14 bus stops along highway.
Consortium said bus operators lost money since under EDSA Bus Carousel scheme, average deployment of buses was reduced to 550 units per day from 3,000.
Artes, said t "bringing back passenger buses along EDSA under old system would cause traffic congestion" since lanes were narrowed to accommodate bicycle lane.
