What does the name INTRAMUROS mean?
It is actually derived from the Latin words "intrā" meaning within or inside, and "mūrus" which means walls or city walls to be more precise.
Latin is the mother tongue of Spanish. Hence, Intramuros is defined by the Real Academia Española as "within the enclosure of a (walled) city or town."
During the Spanish times, Intramuros was the original Manila. Everything outside of its walls were no longer part of Manila but of the Province of Tondo which was also referred to as Manila.
Thus there were two Manilas at that time: the city capital which was inside the walls (Intramuros) and the province outside of it (extramuros).
