"We really need new technologies because of all of these developments… that's part institutions like MMSU, Mariano Marcos State University, like PhilRice ,Philippine Rice Research Institute and all other agricultural research universities, stations do all around the country, part that they play,"President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said farmers should benefit from increase in rice production, he cited need to bring new technology to rice field to ensure food staple remains accessible to ordinary Filipinos.
FMJ gave assurance agriculture department would tap best technologies to address problem.
"So it's correct we have to increase our production…but we have to make sure increase in production redounds to benefit of farmer…because it is equally important for me that farmer makes good living," FMJ said during launch of rice paddy art bearing his image in Batac, Ilocos Norte.
FMJ said new technologies have become so important because of climate change, but problem lies on how to move them from laboratory to market, and how to produce new product on large scale.
"It is government that will develop technologies necessary… government will allow farmers to process their new product…government's job to bring now those new products to market, and to make sure whatever profits are made at the market, it will redound also to benefit of farmers," he stressed.
As an expression of support for government's food security efforts, MMSU and PhilRice launched rice paddy art featuring image of the President and the administration slogan "Bagong Pilipinas."
"MMSU and PhilRice decided to feature FMJ in this year's paddy art in support of his vision of new Philippines, particularly on achieving food security and reinvigorating country's agriculture sector," university said.
According to MMSU, rice paddy art was created using IR 1552, traditional Korean purple variety, as paint, and NSIC RC 222 or Tubigan 18 as green canvas. NSIC RC 222 is variety bred and released by International Rice Research institute in 2010, yields average of 6.1 tons and maximum of 10 tons per hectare.
During launch of rice paddy art, FMJ joked about taste of palay formed part of his image.
"I was teasing students… I said I hope that palay harvested from my image, I hope it will taste good…it may have bitter taste, you may have to modify it…but I don't think that's going to be problem… MMSU will figure it out, PhilRice will figure it out," he said.
Rice paddy art started in Japan in 1993.

United States-supported online agricultural trading hub was launched to connect Filipino farmers to more businesses and help strengthen Philippines' agricultural supply chain.
US government, through US Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Nueva Vizcaya Agricultural Terminal (NVAT), launched first-of-its-kind e-commerce platform to expand market reach of Luzon-based farmer-traders and strengthen agricultural supply chain.
NVAT Fresh Online Platform (NVATFresh.com), directly managed and operated by Luzon-based agricultural hub, is business-to-business online platform where farmers can list their produce for large enterprises such as supermarkets, food processing companies and restaurant chains.
Through platform, farmers can leverage competitive pricing, secure consistent income, reduce food wastage and ensure delivery of fresh, affordable produce straight to businesses and consumers.
