The Philippines celebrated the start of Simbang Gabi, a traditional nine-day series of dawn Masses leading up to Christmas Day, on December 16, 2023. This year, the Masses commenced at various locations including the St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church in Kawit, Cavite, the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City, the Saint Joseph Parish in Las Piñas City, and the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of the Black Nazarene in Manila. These Masses are a significant aspect of Filipino Catholic culture, marking the preparation for Christmas Day, which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ.
In addition to the religious significance, Simbang Gabi is also a time for community gathering. Outside churches, traditional Filipino holiday treats like puto bumbong and bibingka are sold, adding to the festive atmosphere. These Masses, however, are more than just a religious obligation; they are a heartfelt tradition involving the community in a spiritual preparation for Christmas.
In line with safety concerns, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) declared a red alert to ensure security during this period. Additionally, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula issued a circular urging adherence to health and safety protocols amidst reports of COVID-19 and respiratory diseases, emphasizing the importance of mask-wearing and hygiene to protect public health during these large gatherings.
